Several of us just returned from Vancouver, British Columbia. We attended Canada Shotokan’s 40th Anniversary Celebration and Tournament. Two of our members, Brigette Callahan (sandan) and Lori Bartel (shodan) participated as fighters. The US Team took first place in the International Team Competition, edging Israel. Andrae Miller (2012 Nisei Week champion) took first place in the International Men’s Individual Tournament. Trung Pham (CSULB) took 3rd. Our Brigette Callahan took 3rd place in the International Women’s Individual Tournament.
The US Women (Brigette Callahan, Lori Bartel, and Bridgette Ho from Garden Grove dojo) were just solid. Had not Lori and Bridgette won their matches during the first and second rounds of the Team Competition, the US Team might not have advanced. They were good.
Mr. Ohshima led practices during the event. Training with him is always special. Practicing with fellow karate-ka from all over the world was a treat. France Shotokan is planning a major event in 2 years at Normandy, France. Consider coming.
Please congratulate the US Team members and our own dojo members that participated in the event. They gave an excellent example of solid karate and excellent sportsman(person)ship.
